GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers told the Summerfield Town Council the reason his team had a difficult transition is because "papers were destroyed, computers were taken out. So we had nothing. We had no information. We didn't know where to start."
Rogers made the comments Tuesday night.
Wednesday, 2 Wants To Know (2WTK) reached out to the Sheriff's office multiple times to get more explanation about his accusations. We were told the Sheriff was too busy to talk today, but we did get the following statement:
"With respect to Sheriff Rogers’ statements at the Summerfield Town Council meeting last evening, the Sheriff stands behind what he has said—that upon assuming the Office of Sheriff in early December 2018, he and some senior staff members discovered that certain paper and electronic records pertaining to the business of the Sheriff’s Office had been either removed or destroyed and that this made the transition into the Office more difficult. Further investigation into those matters is ongoing and pursuant to N.C. Gen. Stat. §132-1.4(a) and § 153A-98(a) and (c), it would be inappropriate to release additional information at this time. The sheriff thanks the citizens and officials of Summerfield for having the opportunity to come speak about public safety in their great town. Several issues were covered by GCSO in the session."
The Sheriff's communication specialist adds that the agency is conducting an investigation and more information should be released soon.
Guilford County also says it is doing it's own internal investigation that started shortly after Sheriff Rogers took over. County Manager Marty Lawing says that investigation is nearing completion and, "at this point we found none of those allegations have been verified."
Former long-time Sheriff BJ Barnes tells 2 Wants To Know about Rogers' claims "everything he said last night was completely wrong."
