Got Debt? Maybe Your Family Members Do. Will They Pass It Onto You?

Does debt pass into death? Here is the answer!

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Got credit card debt? You have plenty of company, but if something were to happen to you (or if something happens to a family member) would all that debt be passed down and around?

To help you separate fact from fiction, we asked Attorney Blaire Mclanahan.

"Debt does not follow people in death. The only exceptions are if your name is also on the account. Otherwise, you're off the hook."

Here's another fact or fiction: I  don't have a will, but I told my friends and family who the kids should be left with. A conversation is enough to make my sure my wishes are granted.

"Nope. A conversation isn't enough. You need to have it on paper. Even then, it is the court's decision. Guardians are nominated in the will by the last parent to die. And the court ultimately decides if that person is fit to serve in that way."

These are just two of the many questions you could get answered for you on Friday, March 1st for free! Last year alone, 9,000 people called in and were able to talk one on one with a lawyer.
