Cockroach Milk Is Not Milk

What can be called "milk" in North Carolina could change soon.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - These days there are so many types of milk, it can make your head spin.

"The almond milk, the soy milk," said Joe Reardon with the NC Department of Agriculture. "And we recently learned of something called cockroach milk."

WHAT?!?

"Cockroach milk," he said. "We believe this is an example of how the world milk can be mis represented and misused."

And his agency wants to put a limit on what can be called milk. There's already a federal law that says a product call only be called milk if it comes from a hoofed animal.

"The law is clear, it's been on the books for over 30 years," he said.

But the feds aren't enforcing it, so now state lawmakers are considering a bill directing our department of ag to start cracking down. A

"85 percent of 1000 people surveyed believe that if you use the word milk in the name, it's a much different and nutritious product than if the word milk is not in the name," Reardon said.

If the state's plan goes through, all those other products would have be labeled as almond drink or soy beverage. Or by January 1, 2019, the state could force those products off North Carolina shelves.
