Are Stores Required To Ring You Up After Closing Time?

A News 2 viewer was shopping at a store in Alamance Crossing when he says he was denied making a purchase even though he was in the store before it closed.

You've done it. I've done it. It's almost closing time at a store, but you run in to get something.

Here's the question: Do they have to ring you up if it's after closing time?

A News 2 viewer went to Best Buy in Alamance Crossing on New Year's Day.
The store had less than 30-minutes until closing. He says he looked around and by the time he wanted to make a purchase, it was past closing time and no cashiers were there. He wanted to know if a store can refuse to make a purchase even if it's after hours?

The answer is......yes. They can refuse. 2WTK called the State of North Carolina Agriculture and Consumer Services. There is no state law requiring registers to stay open.

2WTK contacted Best Buy and have this statement: "Our goal is to serve every customer who walks into our store during regular business hours. Our store hours are posted online and on our doors so people can plan their shopping accordingly."

In this case, it's "buyer be aware" of the time.
