GREENSBORO, N.C. - You probably don't fix your own car. Or install your own plumbing. But more of us are getting handy by assembling our own furniture. Almost 800 million people shop at IKEA every year.
And if you're one of them, you know putting that furniture together can sometimes be a headache.
But IKEA put out a promotional video for a new line of REISSOR products. The video said you can go from flatpack to furniture in less than five minutes. Five minutes! Ikea ended up pulling the video from the internet, but workers at the Charlotte store still told 2 Wants To Know's Ben Briscoe the furniture would take less than five minutes to assemble.
The bookcases start at 139 dollars. Before you spend that kind of money, Ben put Ikea's claim to the 2 Test.
To make sure it was a fair test, Ben pulled out the pieces out the night before to make sure everything was there. He also went over the instructions ahead of time. And there's one more important disclaimer: an IKEA spokesperson said the five minutes was just for the top half of the bookshelf where the new technology is. The feet and base were assembled before the clock started. So Ben did that also. The feet took him about 11 minutes and 30 seconds.
The top half took Ben about another 10 minutes 30 seconds.
