BOONE, N.C. -- Two people have died after a landslide caused a home to collapse in Boone on Wednesday evening, according to Boone Police.
Multiple agencies responded to the home on Pine Ridge Drive in the Heavenly Mountain Community around 5 p.m. According to a news release, police say the landslide caused catastrophic destruction of the home from a gas leak.
Police say the two people were reportedly in the home when it collapsed. Search and rescue crews recovered the two victims from the rubble. No one else was inside the home.
Watauga County Sheriff's Office is conducting the death investigation.
Heavy rain and flooding has pounded western North Carolina in the past 24 hours.
Governor Roy Cooper issued a state of emergency for western counties.
