11 NC Airports Getting Upgrades: NCDOT

The Tarboro-Edgecombe County Airport will receive $2 million in improvements, including damage repairs caused by Hurricane Matthew. 

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Eleven airports across North Carolina are getting upgrades worth $35.4 million, according to the NC Department of Transportation.

The money is state-funded. NCDOT says the upgrades will support economic growth and tourism in the state.

Aviation contributed $31 billion to the NC ecomony in 2016, according to NCDOT.

Here's a list of the airports getting upgrades and the estimated costs:

  • Albert J. Ellis (Jacksonville) -- Airport lighting, signage and electrical vault replacement -- $1.4 million
  • Billy Mitchell (Hatteras) -- Airport repaving -- $1.2 million
  • Coastal Carolina (New Bern) -- Airport runway repaving -- $3 million
  • Duplin County Airport -- runway widening and improved lighting -- $4 million
  • First Flight (Kill Devil Hills) -- Airport repaving -- $1 million
  • Kinston Regional Airport -- runway and taxiway repaving -- $8 million
  • Laurinburg Maxton Airport -- taxiway repaving -- $2 million
  • Ocracoke Island Airport -- repaving -- $1.2 million
  • Rockingham-Shiloh Airport -- runway repaving -- $3.6 million
  • Statesville Airport -- taxiway parallel construction -- $8 million
  • Tarboro-Edgecombe County Airport -- runway repaving, updating airfield lighting and repairing damage caused by Hurricane Matthew -- $2 million
