GREENSBORO, N.C. — One in seven people in our country has some kind of unclaimed property just waiting for them. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators says it could be cash, stuff that is sentimental or valuable, or both.
For example, you may have an inactive checking account from years past, a missed paycheck, or a utility refund.
In North Carolina, there is almost $1.3 billion in the Unclaimed Property Fund. And if that isn't impressive enough, $108,586,650.00 was given back to folks who made claims from June of 2022 to July of 2023. That's just one year of claims!
NCcash.com confirms that most claims are processed within 90 days, but there is a high volume of people who are claiming their cash, so it could take longer than 90 days. It's easy and FREE to check to see if you, your family members, your church, or your business has unclaimed cash.
You simply type in your name and to narrow down the search you can put in your city and zip code. If you have cash, you will be asked for your social security number to confirm who you are. If you find cash for someone else, tell them!
Have you lived in other states? You need to check there too.
The National Association of State Treasures has set up UNCLAIMED.ORG, where you can search for your state, and it will take you directly to the website to start your search.
Some states and provinces also have partnered up with MissingMoney.com, which requires the same steps to track your property in different states. This is a tool for those who have moved around the country.
The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators urges people to ONLY USE legitimate sites on their websites because they are being asked to enter personal information.
