1 dead in shooting at Sheetz on West Market Street

The Greensboro Police Department, the Greensboro Fire Department, and Guilford County EMS responded to a shooting around 2 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A shooting at the Sheetz gas station on West Market Street near Walker Avenue has left one man dead.

Greensboro police say the deadly shooting happened around 2 a.m. early Friday morning. Jamon Terell Eubanks, 21, was shot at Sheetz then was put into a car and was riding to a nearby hospital.

However, he never made it. While police were on the way to the gas station they pulled over the car Eubanks was in while it was passing the Guilford County Courthouse downtown.

Police say EMS tried to save Eubanks' life but he died at the scene.

A neighbor who lives behind the gas station tells WFMY News 2 she was on her back porch smoking a cigarette when she heard fighting and yelling. Soon after, a slew of gunshots echoed through the neighborhood.

Another neighbor, who lives just a few doors down, said the gunshots woke up her entire family. She mentioned that while she's used to hearing noise from the gas station at night, or cars racing down United Street, knowing that someone was killed just a few feet from her home has left her deeply shaken.

WFMY News 2 spoke to more than a dozen neighbors in the area. Many of them said they're worried about the number of people who frequent the gas station late at night, and several said they believe more police need to patrol the area.

There are still many unanswered questions, including possible suspects, a motive, and who was driving Eubanks to the hospital. Greensboro police said this is an active investigation and they encourage anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers.

This marks the city's 28th homicide so far this year. However, Greensboro's homicide rate is down dramatically by 44% compared to this time last year.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is reported.
