WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem police officers responded to a "large fight" outside the food court at Hanes Mall around 6:30 Saturday night. Despite some posts on social media that there was a shooting there, police say no officer has reported shots fired.
Officials say it involved 80 to 100 juveniles in several different fights. No one was hurt and no weapons were found. Police say they there in violation of the Mall’s curfew and were asked to leave. When officers tried to arrest one teen for trespassing, he resisted and a large group of unidentified males and females began pulling him away from the Officers.
That's when officers used pepper spray. They were able to separate the teen from the crowd and pulled him into the Sunglass Hut Store where he was placed in handcuffs. Another teen was arrested for being disorderly and possession of marijuana.
Over 40 police officers responded to this incident and they remained on-scene for over two-hours, the police department said in a news release.
Last Saturday, police in Greensboro were dealing with a similar situation after a fight inside Four Seasons Towne Center. Rumors of shots fired created mass panic even as police said no shots were fired. Officers arrested Victoria Waldrip, 17, of Marietta, Ga., for trespassing and assaulting an officer.
