How Does the Diet Coke And Mentos Experiment Work

Fourth graders at Brooks Global Studies School in Greensboro tested out the science experiment. They grabbed a bunch of Mentos and Diet Coke and the foam was everywhere.

Maybe you did the experiment as a kid. So we wanted to find out how the whole thing works. It has to do with carbon dioxide inside the soda and little nooks and pockets along the inside of the Mentos.

That combined with the aspertame replacing normal sugar creates an eruption. Our meteorologist Tim Buckley put on a different scientist hat to break down exactly how it all works.
