HIGH POINT, N.C. — The American Red Cross says blood supply is at such critically low levels, it is declaring a nationwide emergency. A group of High Point women is doing its part to help patients get the lifesaving blood transfusions they need.
The High Point Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is holding its annual blood drive January 27. Committee Chair Candice James said there are many reasons why some people don't donate blood.
“Sometimes it's something as small as we have a fear of needles, we don't have a personal connection to the individual, we're not sure where the blood is going,” James said.
According to the American Red Cross, most blood types fall into one of the four major groups: A, B, A-B, and O. However, the best blood type match for patients with rare blood types often comes from donors of the same race or similar ethnicity. James said this is why diversity in the donor pool is so important.
“The African proverb states, it takes a village to raise a child," James said. "It also takes a village to build, support, and uplift a community. This initiative is supporting our community in ways that is life-hanging."
The blood drive is Saturday January 27 at the Carl Chavis Memorial YMCA in High Point from 9:30 am to 2 pm. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are encouraged. Each donor will receive a $20 amazon e-gift card.
