It's almost Hurricane Season! How to prepare your kids for storms

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting an above-average Atlantic Hurricane Season.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This morning, we're talking about something powerful: storms. They can be a little scary, especially for our younger viewers. But fear not; we're here to help you understand storms and stay safe.

Here’s a way to explain storms to kids in a way they understand. Imagine storms like nature's big show. Lots of wind makes the air whoosh, like a giant blowing really hard, and rain falls like tiny waterfalls from the clouds. And sometimes, there's even lightning – like a quick camera flash in the sky, but much brighter.

Thunder can be scary. But here's a secret: the loud boom is just the echo of lightning. It's like when you yell in a cave and hear it bounce back. The lightning happens way before the sound reaches us.

Let's make it an adventure! Read books with fun storm characters. Draw pictures of what they imagine a storm sounds and looks like. You can even make a cozy fort and pretend it's your safe haven during a storm.

Preparing your kids for a real storm is before it happens because it can decrease panic. Tell your kids what could happen in a storm and where you’ll go in your home if it gets rough. Maybe it’s a particular room that’s away from windows. Make sure that you practice going there together during calm weather.
