THOMASVILLE, N.C. — The next step in Novant Health's ongoing expansion in the Triad happened Wednesday morning, as members of the Thomasville community met with Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center leaders to break ground on a new 18,000 square-foot facility.

The Novant Health Wellness and Education building is set to open in 2025 and will be housed where the former health department building is on the edge of Thomasville Medical Center's campus.

According to a release from Novant, the center will help "enhance the overall health of the community by addressing several health equity challenges ... facing patients across the region, specifically related to behavioral health, substance abuse disorder, chronic disease management and rehabilitative care."

The Thomasville Medical Center Foundation provided $2 million in funding toward the project. Most of these funds will go toward significant renovations to the current building where the center will be held.

“We know that 80% of chronic medical issues are preventable with lifestyle changes,” said Jon Applebaum, president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center. “Our goal with this new wellness and education building is to connect with our patients sooner to help them lead healthier lives. The team, in partnership with the patient and their primary care provider, will focus on the prevention and management of complex medical conditions before they have a chance to worsen and require more advanced hospital-based care.”

The new center will offer many services, including mental health evaluations, chronic disease management, physical rehab and community outreach and education.
