Tips to beating fatigue after not sticking to your New Year's Resolutions

Studies show almost half of people do not stick to their New Year's Resolutions but only 9% of people stick to them all year long.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A new year is here yet mental health challenges remain the same.

“January and February can be very difficult months for a number of reasons," Dr. David Gutterman, Clinical Psychologist and Director of LeBauer Behavioral Medicine in Greensboro.

One of the reasons Dr. Gutterman says—people make resolutions and abandon them not long after the new year.

“It can really be discouraging right? I think that if you tend to make resolutions because you have good intentions on following through with them and it can feel really defeating if you fail to meet those expectations especially so early on into the year.”

To combat this, Dr. Gutterman encourages you to make a resolution and change it as need be.

“What you can do is rewrite the script say okay that didn’t work out? let me adjust my resolution and make it more realistic for myself.”

And Dr. Gutterman says get rid of your expectations! It’s like expecting to run a 5k and you’ve never ran a mile.

Start small and build your way to bigger success.

“People who are really successful at many endeavors like stopping smoking or drinking you will talk to them and more times than not they stopped three or four times before actually stopping. so you don’t give up you just alter and learn from the mistakes and then you make the adjustments necessary and keep going," Dr. Gutterman said.

After all if you don’t follow through this year there’s always the next year.
