How working too much can impact you

A body language expert gives advice.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today is National Workaholics Day. But before you fire up the laptop for a marathon session, let's talk about the pros and cons of working too much.

While dedication to your work is admirable, there's a fine line between hard work and workaholism. Long, crazy hours can lead to burnout, fatigue, and even physical health problems like heart disease and weakened immunity. Think about it – you wouldn't drive a car on fumes, so why run your body into the ground?

Workaholism can also strain relationships. You will miss important events like your child's sports game or date night with your romantic partner if you're constantly working. Over time, that chips away at connection and intimacy. Remember, strong relationships are essential for overall well-being.

Some people might not agree with the idea of work-life balance. There can be pressure to hustle and be "always on." Some workplaces even glorify long hours. However, research shows that quality work, not just quantity, matters. A happy, balanced employee is ultimately more beneficial to the company.
