How to stay healthy and eat right during menopause

A dietician answers your questions.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Menopause completely changes the biology of a woman, and there are hundreds of different symptoms related to menopause. That's why you need to know what's best for your body during and after this process.

Today we spoke with Kim Shapira. She's a celebrity dietitian, therapist and author with deep knowledge of menopause and healthy eating.

Shapira says the first thing to understand about menopause is that menopause changes everything. Women may face a higher risk of heart disease, bone loss and weight gain during this time.

Hormonal changes can also impact mental health, potentially increasing the risk of mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and health care check-ins can play crucial roles in managing these risks during menopause.

That's why you need to be extra aware of what foods you eat during menopause. This is what you should eat to lower your risk of disease.

CALCIUM-RICH FOODS FOR BONE HEALTH:

Dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS FOR HEART HEALTH:

Fatty fish, flaxseeds, walnuts, hemp seeds

PLANT-BASED FOODS RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS:

Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support overall health.

LEAN PROTEINS:

Poultry, fish, beans, and legumes for muscle health.

Shapira also recommends plenty of sleep and making tweaks in your routine to walk more.
