NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Eyelash extensions are wildly popular, but are they safe?
Kimberly Orr, an optometrist from Triad Eye Associates, sets the record straight about eyelash extensions and false eyelashes.
#1 Do eyelash extensions cause dry eye?
Dr. Orr: "Are your eyes prone to dryness, redness, irritation, or watering? Eyelash extensions should definitely not be on your to-do list."
#2 Do eyelash extensions cause lash mites?
Dr. Orr: "We’re here to set the record straight! Eyelash extensions do NOT cause lash mites; lash mites are actually caused by poor hygiene."
What are lash mites?
Eyelash mites, also known as Demodex, are tiny parasites that reside in the follicles of your lashes, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).
#3 Can you get Blepharitis from eyelash extensions?
Dr. Orr: "Eyelash extensions can indeed cause Blepharitis. However, it is not the lashes themselves that are the issue; rather, the process of applying or removing them, hygiene practices, and the glue used can lead to the condition. Sometimes, an allergic reaction to the adhesive can also be the culprit."
What is Blepharitis?
According to the AAO, Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids. They can appear red, swollen, or feel like they are burning. It is very common, especially among people who have oily skin, dandruff, or rosacea. It is caused by bacteria build up at the base of your eyelashes.
#4 How do I get rid of eyelash mites?
Treatment for ocular Demodex typically involves an over-the-counter topical medication containing a low concentration of tea tree oil or a hypochlorous-based acid. This can come as a scrub, spray, or cleansing wipe, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology's website.
Tea tree oil possesses antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antiseptic, and acaricidal properties that can effectively combat the bugs. If used topically, these treatments should be applied once or twice a day for a period of one to three months. However, it may cause irritation to some people's eyes. In addition, your doctor may also prescribe a topical steroid to help alleviate inflammation.
