The Food and Drug Administration is now advising consumers to throw away any Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal regardless of size or "best by if used" dates.
The FDA and CDC are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella illnesses that may be linked to the cereal.
The recall notice involves Honey Smacks with best-by dates from June 14, 2018 through June 14, 2019. However, the FDA says boxes with earlier dates could also be contaminated.
More than 70 people have gotten sick in 31 states, including North Carolina.
Salmonella usually causes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
The FDA is also warning a number of foreign countries where the cereal was distributed: Aruba/Curaçao/Saint Maarten (Netherlands Antilles), the Bahamas, Barbados, Tortola (British Virgin Islands), Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, and Tahiti (French Polynesia).
