COVID cases are rising in the Triad

Experts say the variant is easy to catch but not as potent as others.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — State data shows an uptick in COVID cases in the Triad area.

A triad doctor explains why we should not panic.

Dr. Christopher Ohl is an infectious disease expert at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. He said the COVID variant called FLiRT is easier to catch, but it does not pack a punch like other variants. He explains that most people have anti-bodies from previous exposure to the virus.

"It's even more infectious and more likely to grab a hold of your nose or your back of your throat, but less likely to cause severe disease," he shared.

He said COVID usually levels out around this time of the year, but expects it to peak soon.

"My prediction is within the next couple of weeks and that's based on our prior history with summer waves of COVID," he recalled.

The Guilford County Division of Public Health said COVID is a year round concern.

It is important to note that respiratory illness season includes FLU and RSV. The Health Department said both viruses peak between October and February.
