GREENSBORO, N.C. — Nearly 40 states are reporting high COVID activity levels, including North Carolina because a variant is spreading according to the CDC.
Dr. Christopher Ohl, an infectious disease expert at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, shares how the summer COVID surge is impacting the Triad and North Carolina.
How the surge impacts North Carolina
Dr. Ohl says North Carolina reached its peak around two weeks ago and is seeing cases decrease already in the Triad.
Why we're seeing summer surges
COVID cases have seen an uptick in the summer because that's when new variants emerge. It's also a time when people travel a lot or host get-togethers which makes it easier for the virus to spread.
- Staying up to date with vaccinations
- Going outdoors more
- Enhancing hygiene practices
- Wearing a well-fitting mask
- Keeping a distance from others
- Getting tested for respiratory viruses
In March, the CDC officially lifted its recommendation that people with COVID stay home for 5 days. The CDC says 24 hours after symptoms have subsided, is enough.
