GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY News 2 is providing daily coronavirus updates with the latest information from emergency leaders, the state's task force, health departments, universities, school districts, and a lot more.
THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 2020
4:45 p.m. - Guilford County closes Greensboro and High Point courthouses after "a number of employees tested positive" for the coronavirus. The public will not be allowed inside until June 22. Employees are being told to stay home as the courthouses are “thoroughly sanitized,” officials said.
12:00 p.m. - NCDHHS coronavirus Thursday update. Hospitalizations hit a new record for the fourth-straight day. Cases spiked to their second-highest daily increase. There are more than 1,300 new coronavirus cases in North Carolina Thursday reports showed. They bring the total number of cases to 39,481.
There have been nearly 24,000 recoveries, health officials report.
Since yesterday's update, 11 more people have died. There are 812 people in North Carolina hospitals which is - again - a new record.
Coronavirus trends for the last 10 days in the Triad's two largest counties:
Forsyth County has slightly more cases than Guilford County, but Forsyth has fewer deaths. Forsyth reported 25 coronavirus-related deaths, up seven from yesterday, health officials said.
Guilford County reported 85 deaths - up four from yesterday. Local health officials have not yet responded to calls on why there’s a disparity between Forsyth and Guilford.
News to note:
- The White House coronavirus task force is worried about North Carolina's coronavirus testing numbers. According to Johns Hopkins, our state ranks 36th in the nation for testing per capita.
- The North Carolina House of Representatives passed a bill allowing gyms, fitness centers, and bars to reopen with a 69-50 vote. To go into effect, the bill needs to be approved by North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, 2020
4:00 p.m. - A Greensboro Sheetz employee has tested positive for the coronavirus.
According to Sheetz, a worker at the New Garden Road location tested positive for the virus on June 9.
3:45 p.m. - The Davidson County Agricultural Fair will not be held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Kiwanis Club said, “It is impossible to predict what the COVID-19 Pandemic will look like in mid-September, so this decision was made with the health and welfare of our city and county citizens, children and adults, in mind.”
12:30 p.m. - NCDHHS released the latest COVID-19 numbers for the state.
Wednesday, North Carolina reported more than 38,000 total COVID-19 cases and a record number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations. However, the percent of tests that are positive remained flat (between six and eight percent).

- 553,650 TESTS (UP 17,939) (SECOND-HIGHEST TESTING DAY)
- 780 HOSPITALIZED (UP 6) (NEW HIGHEST HOSPITALIZATION DAY for the third-straight day)
- GUILFORD – 1,806 CASES, 81 DEATHS (63 new cases, 0 new deaths)
- FORSYTH – 1,910 CASES, 18 DEATHS (36 new cases, 0 new deaths)
- ALAMANCE – 544 CASES, 23 DEATHS (25 new cases, 0 new deaths)
- RANDOLPH – 842 CASES, 17 DEATHS (33 new cases, 2 new deaths)
11 a.m. - Mount Zion Baptist Church in Greensboro is hosting a coronavirus testing event on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in partnership with Cone Health. The church is located at 1301 Alamance Church Road. You must register online to be tested.
9 a.m. - Greensboro Science Center will begin a limited reopening on June 15. The science center has been closed for three months amid coronavirus concerns.
News to note:
- Gov. Cooper is asking people who have attended large events recently to get tested for COVID-19.
- Cooper and state health officials issued an order for Ace Speedway to close after the racetrack held multiple events with thousands of patrons.
- NCDHHS recently released back to school guidelines, which would include screening students for COVID-19 before they can reenter their classrooms.
