RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the state's first pediatric death of the flu season.
The child was from western North Carolina and unfortunately died from flu-related complications.
Flu season is upon us. It can be confusing to know who can get which vaccines and when. Here's a breakdown of the basics.
Can your child get a vaccine?
Children are at a higher risk of developing severe diseases or complications from the flu, especially those younger than 5 years old.
Children as young as 6 months are eligible to get a seasonal flu vaccine. Those 6 months to 4 years old need multiple doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. A 5-year-old child just needs one dose of an updated COVID-19 vaccine, according to the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS).
Flu vaccines are especially important for those with chronic health problems like asthma, diabetes or a weakened immune system, according to the NCDHHS.
According to the CDC, a pregnant person can receive a single dose of an RSV vaccine from week 32 to week 36 for the prevention of RSV in infants under 6 months.
If you or your child has not received a flu, COVID or RSV vaccine yet, you can get them for free at CVS and Walgreens. You can also click here to find more vaccination locations near you.
Always consult with your healthcare provider about vaccinations.
