GREENSBORO, N.C. — Summertime is filled with so many fun activities, like grilling, swimming, and often fireworks.
You want to enjoy these activities safely, so you don't end up making a trip to urgent care.
Dr. Philip Lamptey, Cone Health Urgent Care Medical Director, broke down important safety reminders as you enjoy summer.
FIREWORKS
- If you are doing them at home, make sure the adults are handling the fireworks
- Wear protective eye gear
- Don't let the kids hold anything with sparks, instead give them something like American Flag to wave
- If you get burned and the skin is not broken you can treat it at home with an aloe vera cream
- When the skin is broken, that's when you need to head to urgent care and see a doctor face to face.
GRILLING
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby
- Establish a kid-free zone so they don't run into the grill
- Look out for the metal bristles if you cleaned the grill, so you can avoid choking hazards
WATER ACTIVITIES
- Learn how to swim or just refresh your skills
- It's never too late to swim, lessons for kids to adults are offered at Cone Health's Sagewell Health & Fitness.
- Have a life jacket nearby if you are jumping into a pool or lake
- Dress your kids in bright swimsuits so they are easier to spot in the water
HEAT SAFETY
- First, get out of the sun and into a cool spot
- Then start drinking fluids to rehydrate
