GREENSBORO, N.C. — Having pain-free summer fun can oftentimes be as simple as grabbing the right pair of shoes!
"Our feet are our foundation," said Dr. Rebecca Sikora, DPM at Triad Foot & Ankle Center.
Without proper support, you can be setting yourself up for a problem like plantar fasciitis or an ankle injury.
The biggest thing to look for in a pair of shoes is support.
Flip-flops are often summer favorites, but they can be flimsy and too flexible.
Try a simple bend test with your flip-flops. If they bend easily they are not offering you any support or protection.
Depending on the type of summer activity you are doing, you may want to consider the following shoes:
- Hiking: Hiking boots offer the best support and protection
- Amusement parks or sightseeing: get a support tennis shoe with a nice cushion
- Running: Make sure you are picking a good running shoe but also remember to replace it more often than other pairs of shoes
- Walking on the beach: Barefoot is ok but if you are going on long walks, think about throwing on a pair of shoes
Croc-style shoes are very popular right now and are often a great summer option. They are perfect for leisure activities, but if any type of running is involved think about a different shoe option.
When it comes to going barefoot, you should avoid it if you can. You can easily pick up an injury without any type of support or shoe protection.
It's especially dangerous for anyone who is diabetic to go barefoot because if your foot gets injured you are at a higher risk for a dangerous infection.
If you start having foot problems get to a doctor sooner rather than later. You don't need a referral, just make an appointment with a podiatrist.
