Men's Health: What men, and the people who love them, need to know

June is Men's Health Month, a time to focus on essential health screenings for men.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — June is Men’s Health Month and with Father's Day just around the corner, it is the perfect time to talk about men's health. We spoke to Dr. Brad Thompson with Cone Health LeBauer HealthCare at Grandover Village about essential health screenings for men along with tips for a healthy life that all men should know.

What are the most important health screenings men should prioritize and at what ages?

Cone Health has a list of health screenings everyone should prioritize. Here is what they suggest men should prioritize and when.

Men:

AGE 20+ Testicular Exam

AGE 55+ Prostate Cancer Screening (PSA)

AGE 65+ Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Screening for those with smoking history

Everyone:

AGE 35+ Cholesterol Screening
AGE 35+ Diabetes Check (Glucose Test/Blood Sugar)
Age 40+ Heart Scan Calcium Test for those with risk factors
Age 45+ Colon Cancer Screening
Age 50+ Lung Cancer Screening for those with qualifying smoking history

Dr. Thompson says there are also health screenings men typically overlook. They include mental health screenings for things like depression and anxiety. He says skin cancer checks are also often overlooked.

There is also one big health myth Dr.  Thompson wanted to debunk. That is that only old men need to worry about their health. "Health problems can happen to anyone at any age," explained Dr. Thompson.

Dr. Thompson also gave some ways that life style changes could improve your health.

"There are many common conditions that can be prevented by life style. Heart disease for instance can be prevent through healthy diet and exercise, and avoiding smoking."

Dr. Thompson also offers ways to achieve a long and health life. It includes a health diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean proteins ,and whole grains. Avoiding sugary drinks. These are linked to weight gain, obesity, kidney and liver disease. Staying hydrated is also important.

Outside of diet and exercise, Dr. Thompson suggests getting enough sleep, regular dental & vision checkups, and limited alcohol consumption.
