GREENSBORO, N.C. — Sprains, strains and muscle pain…no one wants to experience any of them, but injuries can happen even while enjoying fun summer games and activities. And many of these injuries can be prevented.
We spoke with Dr. Dana Brooks with Cone Health OrthoCare Greensboro. He spoke about how to prevent common summer sports injuries and keep you healthy while staying active this summer.
Dr. Brooks says the most common summer sports injury that could be prevented include tennis elbow, leg strains, and injuries related to overuse, like shin splints. He also says doctors also treat more traumatic injuries during the summer like ACL tears, miniscule tears. and rotator cuff injuries.
He says it's important to remember injuries can happen at any time. Injuries can happen during simple activities such as walking or playing catch. That's why you need to be prepare everyday.
Dr. Brooks says there are some steps to lower the risk of injury. He says a proper warm-up is so important. He says stretching is a good start but not enough. You need to make sure you are doing a dynamic warmup that gets your heart rate up like jumping jacks or running in place.
He also says hydration is so important, especially in North Carolina. Summer heat can lead to dehydration and injuries.
