GREENSBORO, N.C. — High blood pressure and hypertension - we hear those terms frequently. But did you know it’s often called “The Silent Killer”? Could you be at risk?
With us today to talk all about high blood pressure is Cone Health cardiologist and Clinical Integration Officer for Cone Health Center for Health Equity Dr. Kardie Tobb.
Here's some information about blood pressure that may be helpful to you.
How to control high blood pressure and hypertension
High blood pressure is often called “The Silent Killer.” It rarely causes symptoms until it is extremely high or has damaged other organs in the body. People are encouraged to get their blood pressure checked regularly by a physician. Some factors impact hypertension that you cannot change such as sex, family history, race, or age. However, there are many areas of life that can be controlled:
- Smoking
- Diet
- Weight management
- Diabetic management
- Cholesterol monitoring
- Exercise
- Alcohol consumption
- Sleep apnea treatment
How does high blood pressure impact women vs. men?
Dr. Kardie Tobb says more women over the age of 65 develop high blood pressure than men. Women are also more at risk for high blood pressure during their reproductive years. Things such as stress in pregnancy can increase the risk.
What are normal blood pressure numbers?
A normal blood pressure level is less than 120/80 mmHg. It is difficult to pinpoint specific symptoms of hypertension because most of the time, there are none.
And don't forget: the Cone Health Center for Healthy Equity is hosting the Building a Better You: Health and Wellness Community Event on Saturday, June 29 from 11 a.m.– 3 p.m., at NC A&T State University's Corbett Sports Center.
The event focuses on closing the life expectancy gap by 5 years in 5 years.
