Expert shares tips on how to stay active with Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease doesn't mean you can't stay active. Do these things to feel better.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Parkinson's is a disease that has an unknown cause and the symptoms vary from person to person. There is no cure, but a Parkinson's diagnosis isn't a death sentence. Knowing more about Parkinson's is key.

The Parkinson's Foundation said approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's each year. People with Parkinson's can have a good quality of life and Cone Health is helping with that here in the Triad.

The Cone Health MedCenter Greensboro at Drawbridge Parkway has a support group for individuals with Parkinson's disease. The group helps its members perform exercises to stay active. The group meets once a month. Any Parkinson's disease patient and caretaker can attend.

Karen Simmers, Personal Trainer and Instructor, of Cone Health Sagewell Health & Fitness, shared tips in our Q&A. Simmers said high-impact activities aren't good for people with arthritis issues. Instead, try biking and yoga.

She says walking, dancing and gardening are all great exercises to build up bone strength.

Simmers said you don't need to check with a doctor to exercise. However, if you do have a medical condition, it's best to check with a doctor first.
