When you think of lies, you tend to think of lies you've told because you don't want to get caught. But, what about the lies that are told about you – the lies that could destroy your reputation, career or relationships. This is the situation that Clayne Crawford of TV series, Lethal Weapon is currently facing. The 40 year old actor says that the rumors about his onset behavior are all lies.
So what if someone was lying about you. How should you handle it? I've got 3 tips:
First, collect facts. You have to have evidence (emails, texts, photos) before you confront.
Secondly, address the behavior not the person. It's tempting to say, "You're a liar. How could you say X, Y, Z." Instead say, "I understand that you said X, Y, Z, which isn't true. Help me understand why you said that." The point is to allow the person to come clean and save face.
Then, if you get push back or more lies then introduce your evidence. "Here's an email that contradicts what you just said." "Or, here's a photo that shows differently."
You have to make the decision of whether you want to maintain a relationship with this person. If the lying continues then you're better off cutting them out of your life.
