GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The name of a fallen Greensboro firefighter will be etched into a granite memorial in Colorado. The memorial honors firefighters who’ve died in the line of duty.
Greensboro Firefighter, Jesse Gray was killed on New Year’s Eve in 1969 after stepping off the back of a fire engine to connect a fire hydrant. The fire engine backed up and struck Gray, killing him. Gray was a member of the then newly-formed Greensboro Firefighter’s Union.
Retired firefighters helped to research Gray’s connection to the union in order for his name to be added to the International Association of Firefighters Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial.
PFFG President Dave Coker said, “He made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the citizens of Greensboro and his family deserves to see his name placed on the Fallen Firefighter Memorial – even if it is several years after his death.”
Gray’s family will travel to Colorado Springs this week to honor his memory.
The memorial has honored fallen firefighters since 1918.
