HICKORY, N.C. — In 28,000 elevators across North Carolina you'll -- hopefully-- always find a familiar face in every single one: Cherie Berry, the state's iconic Commissioner of Labor.
A career filled with more ups than downs, but five four-year terms, Berry, also known as the elevator queen, is enjoying her final ride.
"You get to a certain place in your life where you think, 'Hey, you know, somebody new needs to experience this'" Berry said in an interview with WFMY News 2.
The commissioner gained a unique cult following after the Department of Labor decided to include her photo on every elevator inspection certificate in the state.
Berry says it was a move to give a face to the department, hopefully helping patrons feel safe during their elevator rides.
"It's been the most wonderful experience being able to relate to the people of North Carolina in that personal, fun kind of way," she shared.
From songs, to parody accounts and even brews, there's no doubt North Carolina's iconic elevator lady plays an important role in our state's identity.
"Hopefully I'm gonna have a beer soon in Charlotte!" she said.
Her pro-tip for whoever takes her place…
"They better get a name that rhymes!" she said with a laugh.
We also asked her for her elevator pitch…
"I would say, 'Hey! Look here, I'm responsible for your safety on this elevator, so don't do anything on this elevator you don't want your momma to know about! " she joked. "Because I'm watching!" she added.
According to the Associated Press, Berry, a Catawba County native, was elected to the state House in 1992 and served for eight years. She was elected labor commissioner in November 2000.
Berry says she's most looking forward to spending more time with her grandkids and great grandkids in her retirement.
