WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Possible walkouts in Winston-Salem could affect students commuting to school this morning.
Today marks the third day of call-outs and demonstrations for bus drivers employed by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
It started last week when dozens of bus drivers did not show up for work the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
The drivers say they are walking out for better pay. The current pay for bus drivers in the district starts at $16.69 per hour.
When WFMY News 2 talked with the bus drivers last week, they said the school district can't run without them so they are hoping the demonstrations really make an impact.
“We're needed. How are the kids gonna get to school? Parents gotta get to work. So, if this doesn't work, I don't know, they might not just have any drivers," one bus driver said.
The district says it's working to address the drivers' concerns.
Officials from WS/FCS told WFMY News 2 the following statement: "District leaders continue to aggressively work toward the goals laid out November 22 to address concerns of drivers and get them back to work. Today, leaders plan to meet with the Bus Driver Advocacy Group."
Leaders also addressed parents: "We are sorry that families are facing this inconvenience. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this situation."
