FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — A student was charged after a BB gun was found in a backpack at West Forsyth High School Thursday afternoon, according to Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
The school district said the campus was 'on hold,' which differs from a lockdown. There is no threat to the campus at this time.
An investigation with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office(FCSO) and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System led to the recovery of a BB gun on the school campus. The SRO found the student and took the BB gun without incident; all students and teachers were unharmed.
Deputies said the student will be charged with misdemeanor Possession of a Weapon on Educational Property.
The principal sent a statement to parents about the incident:
Hello West Forsyth parents,
This is Kevin Spainhour, principal at West Forsyth High School. Earlier today, the administration was informed about a potential safety issue on campus. It was anonymously reported that a student may have a weapon on campus. The school was placed on hold while we investigated with our law enforcement partners. Upon investigation, our administrators and SRO determined a student did have a B.B. gun, NOT a real firearm. No one was ever threatened or harmed, the B.B. gun was never displayed, but we want to remind students and parents that anything resembling a weapon is not allowed on campus. The student will be disciplined according to district policy.
Any report of a potential weapon is taken seriously. We appreciate students making us aware of anything that concerns them, and we appreciate parents support in making sure students do not come to school with any item that can be perceived as a weapon or do harm to others.
