WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The University of North Carolina School of the Arts announced Tuesday, Aug. 20, a new scholarship to honor a dining staff member who passed away in June.
The Hector Manuel Lopez Jr. Memorial Scholarship is needs-based and is open to students of all majors. Bill Watson, who is a member of the UNCSA Foundation Board of Directors, and Judy Watson, established the scholarship.
Lopez was an integral part of the UNCSA campus community and is remembered for his passion for students.
“He cared so much about our students, he cared so much about their well-being, about their development as people, about their development as artists, and I know there’s nothing he’d want more than to serve and help those students forever,” Brian Cole, Chancellor of UNCSA, said.
More recently, the Board of Trustees at UNCSA approved the renaming of the dining hall in honor of Lopez. UNCSA alumni led an online petition calling on UNCSA leadership to rename the dining hall.
