GCS and Greensboro Water Department respond to water issues at Southeast Guilford Middle School and High School

Both schools were made aware that the City of Greensboro has been flushing its lines resulting in the water discoloration.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Two Guilford County schools are dealing with ongoing water problems.

Students and staff at Southeast Guilford Middle School and High School can't use tap water because of plumbing issues. According to social media posts from Southeast Guilford Middle School and High School, both schools have been dealing with water discoloration.

All of the water in both schools has been completely flushed out after a scare due to discolored water. The water problem occurred because of a planned construction event at a nearby water plant.

Several parents, including Evey Woolley, said they felt the situation is being handled well by Guilford County Schools.

"They instructed us that the county would be bringing in water, the handwashing stations, and water fountain stations and then instructed the kids to bring water every day and I mean, they seem to have it under control and that they're going to get it fixed," Woolley said.

GCS provided bottled water for drinking and hand sanitizer in restrooms. The high school said it relocated one classroom while maintenance and custodial crews addressed the issue.

Scott Jewell, water supply manager for the City of Greensboro, said he understands the concerns parents have about the water problem and the school system's precautions. He said no one likes to see discolored drinking water, but that it was likely never something that could harm anyone.

"It's just an over abundance of minerals that are already present in the water. We all have to have minerals in our drinking water. We can't drink the still water. We have to have those minerals, that's what our body likes," Jewell said.

Jewell said both Southeast Guilford Middle School and High School have one last bacteria test they are waiting on and hope to receive results by tomorrow morning.
