Rockingham County installing weapon detection systems in schools

The new technology has been active at Holmes Middle School for the past two weeks.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Rockingham County Schools is continuing to install metal detectors to keep guns out of school and enhance overall safety.

The new technology has been active at Holmes Middle School for the past two weeks.

On Monday morning, school leaders held a ribbon cutting for the new weapons detection system. Rockingham County Superintendent Shawn Stover expressed the need for the system in today's current school climate.

"You can't learn if you are worried about what will happen to you. Will someone come and bring a weapon inside the school." Stover said.  "This just affirms our commitment and creates a sense of safety so that our students can learn and survive."

Funding for the weapons detection system came from the school system's sales tax funding along with a grant from the North Carolina Center for Safer Schools.

Superintendent Stover says Holmes Middle School is a pilot for the weapons detection system, but the plan is to have scanners at every middle and high school by the start of the next school calendar year.
