School bus safety top of mind this year for Rockingham County Schools

As Rockingham County Schools prepare for the new school year, district leaders share important updates on its bus safety.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Rockingham County school leaders, law enforcement, and the District Attorney (DA) talked about bus safety.

All Rockingham County Schools buses have cameras to make sure everyone stays safe on the road and catch someone who is not following the rules of the road. This year, the DA says there is a No Tolerance Policy for failure to stop at a stopped school bus.

"This is a message to anybody thats not paying attention. Don't pass a stopped school bus, stop," said Sheriff Sam Page Rockingham County Sheriff's Office. "You're helping to save a child's life. Were being preventative. it makes our job a lot easier. if we have to go against someone who violates the law, we'll go to the fullest."

Rules of the road with a stopped school bus:

If you're driving down a two-way road with no median, you need to stop for a school bus, regardless of which direction you're headed.

If there's a center turn lane and the school bus comes to a stop, you need to also stop.

If there's a four-lane road with no median, you still have to stop.

"The last thing Rockingham County schools, our law enforcement partners, the district attorney's office ever want to do is to have a child severely injured or killed as a result of a motorist being negligent, not paying attention, speeding and then passing a stop school bus," said Sean Gladieux, Rockingham County Schools' Director of Safety.
