Educators empowered by new training strategy: Conscious Discipline

Being consciously disciplined is something for educators and parents. Knowing how to regulate your emotions can start with anyone.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — There's a new approach to learning in the classroom called 'Conscious Discipline'.

It's designed to create a calmer classroom environment starting with how educators respond.

Over 150 early childhood educators from Randolph County and surrounding counties were trained in a day-long professional development focused on conscious discipline. It gives educators tools for navigating conversations with their students.

Early Childhood Specialist Sandy Johnson said the first thing that needs to be done is to start with your internal state.

"You cannot control someone else's behavior," Johnson said. "You can only control the way that you respond in the moment to the behaviors and so they did a lot of activities to learn to press pause to learn what is happening in the moment."
