GREENSBORO, N.C. — Artificial Intelligence is the future and NC A&T is leading the way.
The University of North Carolina System Board of Governors has approved a new bachelor's degree in artificial intelligence (AI) at NC A&T. This is marks it as the first standalone AI degree in the state and one of only a few in the nation.
While other universities in North Carolina may offer AI-focused tracks within computer science, A&T's program stands out as a dedicated degree, underscoring the university's commitment to innovation and addressing workforce demands.
Meeting the Demand for AI Talent
AI is reshaping industries worldwide, from healthcare and transportation to entertainment and finance. The need for skilled professionals who can ethically and effectively harness AI's potential is surging. A recent report from Hannover Research projects that North Carolina’s AI labor market will grow three times faster than the overall job market, potentially adding over 20,000 jobs.
North Carolina A&T aims to fill this gap with a rigorous curriculum that combines foundational AI principles, advanced techniques, and real-world applications. The program will prepare graduates to excel in a rapidly evolving field.
“We’ve created a rich AI learning environment informed by cutting-edge science and policy,” said Chancellor James R. Martin II. “This degree will empower students to make immediate, meaningful contributions, especially in critical areas of human-AI interaction.”
Two Concentrations for Tailored Learning
Students can choose between two concentrations:
- Advanced AI Systems (offered through the College of Engineering)
- Applied AI (offered through the College of Science and Technology)
The program accommodates diverse learning preferences with flexible formats, including on-campus and online classes. The first cohort is expected to begin in Fall 2025, the school says.
As the largest historically Black university (HBCU) in the U.S. for over a decade, A&T is renowned for producing top Black STEM and engineering graduates. It ranks as the No. 1 producer of Black engineers and computer science graduates among HBCUs, with strong industry ties to companies like Google, Microsoft, and Lockheed Martin.
Through partnerships with major AI initiatives, including the Athena AI research center, A&T students will gain access to real-world research opportunities and mentorship from top AI professionals.
With this program, North Carolina A&T continues to pave the way for innovation, equipping students with the tools to lead in the AI-driven future.
