NC A&T classes suspended Thursday as the university repairs heat in multiple buildings

The university said repairs weren't completed as expected and will be suspending classes Thursday as well.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Due to weather conditions, classes at North Carolina A&T have been suspended on Wednesday.

The university said their heating systems required replacement parts and repair work that could not be completed before the weekend and have also suspended classes for Thursday.

The university also said they will move to remote instruction on Friday, Jan. 19.

University officials confirm that the cold weather impacted the steam plant on campus. William Barlow the Associate Vice Chancellor for NC A&T facilities said frigid temperatures froze the steam plant's pipes and valves.

"Our older buildings are fed by steam. The steam goes into the building and then we have a mechanical room that converts the steam to heat. Our newer building uses gas heat. It goes to the building and our mechanical room converts the gas to heat," Barlow said.

He said the steam plant's infrastructure is aging and the university plans to fully convert all buildings to gas in the future.

"You're talking about a 40-year-old infrastructure structure," Barlow said, "It's just a very unfortunate situation."

WFMY News 2 spoke to students who said they had water and heating issues over the past 24 hours.

"It's not really affecting our individual room but in the hallways, it's definitely cold. It definitely affected the central heating. It's actually pretty toasty in our room but the halls are cold," student Maya Avilez said.

"I was very mad because I didn't even get to put soap on my back before the hot water was gone," student Lamadia Brewington recalled.

Teachers and non-essential employees are encouraged to telework.

School officials encouraged students who live in the buildings without heat to return home, for students who could not return home they said Housing and Residence Life has secured alternative accommodations.

NC A&T students make arrangements as frigid temperatures froze the university's steam plant's pipes and valves, causing multiple buildings to be without heat. Classes are canceled on Thursday, Jan. 18, and students will have remote instruction on Friday, Jan. 19.
