Parent voices concern after Davidson County teacher allegedly writes racial slurs, vulgar term on classroom board

A Ledford High School teacher was suspended with pay pending an investigation. A parent said the teacher used it as a part of a lesson.

DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — There's an investigation underway Tuesday night about a teacher who is accused of writing a racial slur, a vulgar term, and the name of a hate group on a classroom whiteboard at Ledford High School.

The Executive Director of Davidson County Schools, Tabitha Broadway, said the school district finds it "abhorrent, appalling, and unacceptable in any of our classrooms."

The teacher was suspended with pay pending as an investigation is conducted, Broadway confirmed.

Broadway also issued an apology to students, parents, staff, and the community for the incident.

However, parents are sounding off on social media.

The mom of a student who was in that particular classroom said she received many texts and calls from her son who walked into class and saw three vulgar terms on the board.

Brittany Puckett said her son felt uncomfortable.

Puckett said she immediately called the school and spoke with the teacher.

She said the teacher explained to her that this came from a lesson he teaches that helps students get out of writer's block.

Puckett said the teacher told her the class was writing about heroes, and this was supposed to help them get started with their assignment.

"The story that he was telling me just didn't really make sense. How do you go from writing about heroes and struggling with that to racist statements and stuff like that? I kind of feel like it's stirring the pot or creating a space where people feel like that's ok. So, it really concerns me. I never would've thought that would happen at school, especially by a teacher. So it's very concerning," Puckett went on to say.

Ledford's principal sent students a message last night making them aware of the situation, saying they will do what they can to prevent future incidents like this.

"Regardless of the intent, this type of language is unacceptable for our school environment. I expect students and especially staff alike would create an environment that's inclusive and accepting to all, the principal said.
