HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University received a $20 million donation from alumnus and community leader, Doug Witcher.

The School of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences will be renamed the Douglas S. Witcher School of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences.

Witcher graduated in 1977 with a degree in education when the university was known as High Point College.

He was also named HPU's 2017 Alumnus of the Year.

He serves on HPU's Board of Trustees and is the founder and CEO of Smart Choice, a Triad-based insurance network.

This isn't the first big gift he's given either.

In 2020, he donated $2 million to HPU to create an endowed fund to support the maintenance of the Witcher Athletic Center. He also donated $2 million in 2013.

“My most recent gift to the university is, in part, honoring Luke 12:48, ‘To who much is given, of him much is expected.’ In other words, this university has given me so much, and I’ve always felt I need to be a good steward to this school,” Witcher said. “I’d like again to thank Dr. Qubein and everyone else who was involved in conveying this honor to me.”
