Guilford County Schools votes to approve school reentry plan

In an 8 to 1 vote, nearly all Board of Education members agree that learning loss for many students is far too great to continue solely remote instruction.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Guilford County Schools approved Superintendent Contreras' reentry plan for middle and high school students Tuesday night.

The board voted 8 to 1 to accept the three-week phased reentry plan - with students returning based upon their cohort and grade level.

"We know we are looking for more equitable educational outcomes - but true education justice happens in the classroom," said Dr. Contreras.

The school board discussed several topics including consideration for vaccine distribution, rapid testing ability, learning loss due to COVID-19, student performance, as well as participation and proficiency.

“We’re heading in the right direction,” Board of Education member Deborah Napper said.

The reentry strategy follows Governor Roy Cooper's recommendation from last week.

The plan prioritizes phasing in sixth grade through twelfth grade in two groups - or cohorts - with some students attending Monday/Tuesday and the other group Thursday/Friday.

Secondary reentry starts February 22, phasing in more grades each week until all middle and high school students have returned for in-person learning. Find out more by clicking here.

Board members voiced concerns about vaccinating teachers, substitute teachers availability in the event a teacher is feeling ill from receiving the vaccine, as well as student involvement in sports and more.
