GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — As we celebrate Valentine's Day, Guilford County Schools (GCS) is recognizing couples who are married throughout the district.
WFMY News 2 spoke to two couples who said they grew in love and career.
Thea and Vernon McHam are high school sweethearts, combined they have served the district nearly 60 years.
"I think the biggest thing is supporting each other. Encouraging one another and looking for that next step." Mr. McHam said.
"It never gets boring because every day is a new day and every day is something different," Mrs. McHam said.
The two are in their 23rd year of marriage. Mrs. McHam is the Principal of Kernodle Middle School and Mr. McHam is the Director of Operations for CTE at GCS.
Growing Together in Love: Guilford County Schools recognized a couple married for 23 years!
Over in Jamestown, a married couple of 11 years said they started as friends. Laura and Gary Gonzalez combined served just over 50 years in the district.
"We are teammates, we taught the same team together. We taught the same hall, the same grade level for years," Gary said, "She was my best friend for a long time."
They both work at Jamestown Middle School. Laura is a teacher and James is an Alternative Learning Coordinator.
"We love it, we ride to work together. It's a beautiful thing to be able to share," Laura shared. "Teaching is a hard profession and it's nice to have that camaraderie."
Both couples said that education truly is their passion.
