GREENSBORO, N.C. — Wednesday evening hundreds of families filled the Greensboro Coliseum for Guilford County Schools Annual Choice Showcase.
The event is a one-stop shop for K-12 students to learn about 66 programs. It's called a choice showcase because it allows students to choose their interests and apply for programs.
Nearly 50 GCS schools were represented and some of the programs include performing arts, S.T.E.M., and international studies.
WFMY News 2 stopped by one booth by Johnson Street Global Studies. It serves K-8 students who get to learn and experience international culture in the convenience of their classroom.
"We have different groups come in to perform including Chinese acrobats and African dancers." Data Manager Allison Buniva said, "This year we're doing an international night and we have someone from Japan coming to do drums for our students."
Greensboro College Middle College is the only school throughout GCS that caters to junior and senior students. Principal Christopher Burnette told WFMY News 2 that the school is located on Greensboro College's campus. The program allows students to get free college credits and tuition.
"We give students the opportunity to take college classes on a college campus with college students and college professors," Burnette said, "Students also get the high school experience in a smaller environment and smaller classes."
If you missed the showcase tonight, each school is having a Tuesday Tour where families can get a closer look at the programs.
"One thing we really want to ensure is that students have the opportunity to find a school that focuses on what they are passionate about. We want to make sure that they have a voice and a choice with our school district," GCS Executive Director of Choice Schools and Programs Dr. Kimberly Robertson said, "If their students are interested in Arts, S.T.E.M., Robotics, Engineering, and Medical Careers. We have a school for them."
The district is currently accepting applications, the deadline to apply for these programs is February 23rd.
