Changes coming for students who ride the bus at 25 Guilford County Schools

GCS says fewer students are riding the bus so they're having parents re-register their students.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. โ€” Some parents with students at Guilford County Schools will need to re-register their children for transportation.

Even if you haven't moved or changed your child's school there's a big update to bus rides.

GCS transportation leaders said students aren't showing up to their bus stops even though they're registered to ride the bus.

So to keep from making unnecessary stops GCS Executive Director of Transportation Faye Crowder-Phillips said the district is making students in four zones re-register

Forty thousand students signed up to ride the bus last year, but Crowder-Phillips said only 29,000 students are taking up seats.

" If we get an accurate student count we will maximize routes," Crowder-Phillips said. "It will help in staffing to make sure we're efficient."

To get an accurate count current and new students at  25 schools will need to re-register for transportation by the 31st of this May.

It includes elementary, middle, and high school students.

Parents are encouraged to attend one of several transportation fairs hosted by the district.

Crowder-Phillips said the fairs are a great way for parents to ensure their children have a way to get to school come fall.

"When you come to the parent fair we have a QR code that will take you to the registration link," crowser-Phillips said. "We have staff here that will answer any questions you may have for next year."

The district will continue its choice program offering various ways of getting to school from riding the yellow bus to city buses and shuttles.

"They'll be sent to a hub, they will change buses, and then be taken to school. There may be community express bus stops. We also encourage students to use public transportation as we have the last few years," Crowder-Phillips said. "There will of course be non-transport zone where students will need to walk to school based on the location of their home."

District leaders strongly encourage parents to go to one of the transportation fairs.

Newly enrolled early and middle college students attending GTCC will also experience changes
