GREENSBORO, N.C. — Studies show 25 percent of students have some form of test anxiety. A Guilford County school has a plan to make the End-of-Grade (EOG) exams more fun and less scary.
Each week, third through fifth-grade students at Sumner Elementary School focus on a different theme as they study in small groups. Principal Tiffany Hinton said it’s all a part of the school’s “EOG Blitz”.
“Each week is a theme,” Hinton said. “The first week we did a sports theme, which surrounded us having passages and word problems around sports. Followed by the second week is now our bakery theme and we’re going to get some cupcakes from Easy Peasy Decadent Deserts in Greensboro, they’re donating to us. At the end, they’re going to decorate a cupcake."
Hinton said the different themes teach students that what they learn in school can be applied outside of the building. She said once the anxiety is reduced, students are eager to learn more.
“They’re even asking us for stuff to do over the summertime,” Hinton said. “Packets and things of that sort. So, it just doesn’t end with the EOG. It continues and we do find resources for them to find different places outside of school over the summertime to extend their learning.”
Students participated in an Olympic theme week last Friday.
