Alamance-Burlington School System holds meeting to discuss COVID-19 protocols, remote learning options

Tuesday, the school board met to discuss remote learning plans for ABSS.

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — The Alamance-Burlington School System held a special called meeting Tuesday to discuss COVID-19 protocols within the school district.

School leaders presented two plans to the board, one being a virtual instruction plan, which would be used for students involved in remote learning on a full-time basis, if needed.

The other, which was the focus of Tuesday’s meeting, utilizes the remote option if a student is in quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure, according to school officials.

District leaders presented the remote instruction plan to the board in the case a school or classroom must close due to the exposure of COVID-19.

Chief accountability officer Amy Richardson presented the plan(s) to the board of education.

Plan(s) will be revisited at next Monday’s school board meeting. If approved, the plan(s) will be implemented October 4, school officials said as of Tuesday.

“The school system must offer a remote learning option to students,” Richardson said.

She said in the event of a COVID exposure in a classroom or if a student is exposed to the coronavirus, they will be provided a school assigned laptop while in quarantine.

According to Richardson, school officials will give options for students on quarantine to learn synchronously with their class and be given asynchronous assignments.

“It is up to the educator in the classroom to make that decision,” Richardson said.  “(It will be up to them) to decide the best time for students on quarantine and teachers to meet.”

Live instruction will be provided through Zoom if an entire class is quarantined, according to Richardson.

“If an individual child is on quarantine, the class happens during the school day in conjunction with the face-to-face class,” she said. “If the entire class is remote, office hours will be offered.”

Board member Patsy Simpson posed several questions to school leaders.

Simpson asked questions regarding laptops, remote learning, students having the proper access to school equipment and more.

The board did not vote for the plan(s) presented regarding COVID-19 protocols, but only discussed them at Tuesday’s special called meeting.
