ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Alamance-Burlington School System Superintendent Dr. Dain Butler has resigned amid a challenging year.
Within the resignation agreement, between now former Superintendent, Dr. Butler and the district it said the two parties agree it's in their best interest to conclude his employment.
According to the district's website, Dr. Butler was an ABSS alumni and longtime educator. During his tenure as superintendent, he took a public 'zero tolerance' stand on bullying.
ABSS Board Chair, Sandy Ellington-Graves said parting ways wasn't an easy decision to make.
"I believe this is our third closed session meeting. We've been working and it's weighed heavy on all seven of us and just trying to figure out what is best for the district and just really keeping that hyper focused on what can we do that best serves this district and a new leadership. I think is a way that we can rebuild the trust in the community," she said.
Also, within the resignation agreement, the school board agreed to pay Dr. Butler a severance payment of just over $102,000. The board also agreed to pay him an additional amount, up to $116,000.
"The unilateral agreement in his initial contract was actually more than that. So, we were able to meet somewhere in the middle and hopefully be able to move forward and expedite the resignation to allow us to start searching for a permanent superintendent," explained Ellington-Graves.
John Paisley is chairman for the Alamance County commissioners. Paisley explained what he's looking for in the next superintendent.
"I think a superintendent that wants to work with the county commissioners and work with budgeting and not come back to us on a monthly or bi-monthly basis for more funding. We have to live within our budgets and that includes the school board. So, I hope the new superintendent will be able to do that," Paisley said.
Last month the district's CFO also parted ways with the school system. Days later, the Deputy Superintendent was suspended with pay.
The board named Chief Student Services Officer Dr. Kristy Davis as the acting ABSS Superintendent as they search for their next superintendent.
